Believe it or not, 11.13% of the people who use SelfPromotion.com support the site!
The problem is, this is an "arms race". People find out a way to get undeserved rankings (for example, by keyword stuffing), then the search engines find out about it and change their systems so it doesn't work any more.

Personally, I don't think it's worth it. Better to spend your time making your website useful, let people know about it so they'll link to you, get it listed with all the search engines and indexes, and make them search engine friendly. As the search engines improve their algorithms, you'll be rewarded with the rankings you deserve.
