What is a Search Engine?

A Search Engine is a database of web-pages. It uses a special program called a web-spider to wander around the web, recording information about web-pages it finds.

When you "add your url" to a search engine, you are basically suggesting that it come and take a look at your website. If it likes what it sees, it may add it to its database, and keep a copy of some of the information on your page to show to searchers. What it remembers about your page is up to the web-spider; you can't control it, but if you provide good meta-tags and a good title tag, most spiders will use the information in them.

Just being in a search engine database does not mean you'll rank highly for any particular query. That depends on the search engine's ranking algorithm, which looks at your web-page and tries to figure out what it's supposed to be about.
