How do I get people to link to me? And why should I?

Many search engines, in particular Google, base their rankings in part on how many other "well regarded" sites link to you. A link is like a testemonial about the quality of your site.

Thus, getting good sites to link to you is a good idea.

The easiest way to get links is to give them. If you find a site that is related to yours and is useful, link to it! You've just made your site more useful to your visitors.

If you're concerned about "losing" a visitor to another site, simply create links that pop open another browser window. The way to do this is by using a TARGET parameter in the link, as follows:

<A HREF="the url" TARGET="_blank">Click Here</A>

Now that you've linked, email the webmaster of the other site, mention you've linked and why (flattery will get you everywhere), and suggest a link back. Provide as much information as possible to make it as easy as possible for you new best friend to help you out. Suggest exactly where the most appropriate place would be, and provide the HTML he or she would have to add.

You'll be surprised at how often you get what you want!
